High Containment Unit
The Central Veterinary Institute has access to extensive laboratory facilities for
r
esearch, disease control (including animal disease control) and the production of safe and health foodstuffs. Facilities include a bacteriological laboratory, virological laboratory, a laboratory for food chain quality and zoonoses, a chemical and endocrinological laboratory and a pathology laboratory.
Bacteriology and Virology
This laboratory includes the following expertise, techniques and
facilities:
host pathogen genomics and proteomics
single domain antibody technology
monoclonal antibody production
recombinant protein expression, production and purification derived from eukaryote and prokaryote cell systems
cell cultures and virus isolation
immunoassays (EIA, ELISA, HI, CBR etc.)
SPR detection (surface plasmon resonance), a high throughput detection system mainly for antibodies, antigens and protein chip platforms
PCR detection (conventional and real-time)
blotting
molecular engineering
molecular cloning
AFLP
biacore
bacteriophage culture laboratory
Ussing chamber analysis
SISP (small intestinal segment perfusion)
IR SISP (ischaemia-reperfusion-small intestinal segment perfusion)
diffusion chamber
surgical models
vascular catheter (Swann-Ganz; venous, arterial, portal vein)
intestinal fistulae (ileoceacal fistulae)
Pathology
Activities in the field of pathology include immunohistochemistry, pathohistology and FACS analysis.
Chemistry and Endocrinology Laboratory
Routine analyses of samples from the field of chemistry, nutritional chemistry, clinical chemistry, haematology and endocrinology are carried out in this laboratory. Activities carried out here under ISO 17025 standards include the following:
the preparation of sample materials provided for certain analyses;
chemical analyses including classical livestock feed testing, elemental analysis, amino acid chromatography and sugar component chromatography;
clinical determination of nutrients and enzyme activity in plasma or serum;
hormone determination including the stress hormones cortisol and ACTH, metabolic hormones such as insulin, and fertility hormones such as progesterone;
determination of haematology parameters.
